Does my mezzanine floor need planning permission?

They are space creators, cost savers and hugely flexible ways of creating office, storage, training or production space. But if you want to add a mezzanine floor to your business, will you need planning permission?

Mezzanine flooring can be a hugely cost effective addition to your warehouse, enabling you to increase the usable space within your facility without buying or renting more. Mezzanines typically pay for themselves within a short period of time and can remove the time and hassle of finding new premises, fitting them out and reprinting the company stationery to include the new address.

One of the biggest benefits of installing a mezzanine is simplicity. Where new builds and extensions will usually involve planning permission, mezzanines usually won’t. You will need to tell the landlord about your plans to ensure none of your changes contravene any conditions of your lease. And you will still need to ensure the mezzanine is constructed to comply with fire and building regulations. But providing the mezzanine is freestanding and not attached to the fabric of the building (by their very nature, most mezzanine floors are freestanding) you shouldn’t need planning permission.

To be absolutely certain, ask us to carry out a free site survey to assess your facility. We’ll be able to explore the viability of a mezzanine floor and/or other potential space/efficiency saving measures.
